How could one appreciate the beauty of 2046 without watching Chungking Express first?
2046 is a destiny quest, In the Mood for Love is a nosdalgia of personal emotions and struggle, and Chungking Express is a set of two case studies of Hongkong small potatoes' puzzlement and challenge to a world dominated by the grids of time.
2046 in a sense reverberates Chungking Express more, although it is meant to be a sister piece of In the Mood for Love. In Chungking Express, Wong Kai-wai dumped out a bunch of questions about the passage of time, which apparently he has been asking himself. In 2046, on the other hand, he attempted to give some answers. One example of these answers is this scene: The owner of the small inn told Tony the good news of his daughter (played by Faye Wong) finally getting her much struggled for marriage with the Japanese guy (played by Takuya Kimura), mentioning in the end that his daughter liked Tony's book, 2046, very much, except that the ending was too sad. The daughter asked if Tony can change the ending. After dropping an ambivalent "I'll try", Tony settles in front of his desk. The camera now switches focus and zooms in to one of the most memorable shots in this film. The tip of his pen lowers towards the paper, filled with determination. Then it freezes. An hour later... 3 hours later... 10 hours later... 30 hours later... What freezes here is not the pen, but the time. When the elapse of time is incapable of changing people's hearts any more, it stops. So does this happen when the robot waitress's tear came down 5000 hours after she had been moved by Takuya Kimura's tender secret.
The actual sci-fi connotation of 2046 lies in Wong Kai-wai's envisioned world where time no longer prevails, where nothing will become overdue. It is never too late to feel.
